Among the stars of this underwater spectacle are the Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi), a species perfectly adapted to the vibrant coral ecosystems surrounding Sint Maarten. These sleek predators, typically reaching lengths of 6 to 10 feet, exhibit a streamlined morphology optimized for agile navigation through reef structures. As apex predators of their reef habitat, they play a critical role in maintaining the ecological balance, preying on weaker fish and thus supporting biodiversity. Contrary to popular misconception, Caribbean reef sharks are generally inquisitive rather than aggressive toward humans, displaying a cautious curiosity during encounters.
